Australian Football: Mariners close on top six

Central Coast Mariners kept their top-six hopes alive with a crushing 5-0 win over Wellington Phoenix on Tuesday night.

The Mariners are making a real push to finish in the top six to leave them in eighth position on the ladder, just two point behind the finals positions.

Phoenix rout

The Mariners were ruthless against the Nix when opening up a 2-0 lead in the opening 24 minutes of the game thanks to goals from Marco Urena and Beni N’Kolo.

Jason Cummings, Matt Hatch and Garang Kuol completed the scoreline after the break to leave the Mariners unbeaten in seven games and one of the form teams in the A-League.

They are hitting form at just the right time and coach Nick Montgomery believes there is even more to come from his side.

"We can get better, there's no doubt we can get better," Montgomery told reporters after the game. "It's consistency, believing in the process and keeping playing. We don't feel there's any pressure on us.

"Everyone wrote us off at the start of the season but for us, we don't listen to any outside noise, we just concentrate on ourselves."

Kuol potential

Kuol, who is the brother of former Mariners ace Alou Kuol, had a great game and Montgomery is excited about what the future holds for the 17-year-old.

"He's got plenty of work to do but the kid is very, very good and he's part of our family here," Montgomery added.
