An each-way bet can be thought of as two separate bets, one on the horse to win the race, and one on the horse to ‘place’.
Whether a horse has placed or not depends on the place terms being offered for the race, which itself typically depends on how many horses are in a race.
After selecting your bet, you have the option to place an each-way bet by ticking the box marked E/W on your betslip, which also tells you the place terms. This will double your stake. So a £5 each-way will have a total stake of £10 - £5 on the horse to win, £5 on the horse to place.
Runners | Place terms |
---|---|
Handicaps of 16 or more runners | 1/4 odds 1-2-3-4 places |
Handicaps of 12-15 runners | 1/4 odds 1-2-3 places |
All other races of 8 or more runners | 1/5 odds 1-2-3 places |
Races of 5-7 runners | 1/4 odds 1-2 places |
Races of fewer than 5 runners | Place money invested to win |
bet365 also offers Each Way Extra, which gives you the option to increase or decrease the number of places in a race when you are betting Each Way on selected horse racing.
When you use Each Way Extra you can add places to your each-way horse racing bets and take a reduced price or remove places and increase the odds on your selection.
The number of Each Way Extra places offered on a race can be viewed on the Each Way Extra coupon or on the bet slip.
Full terms and conditions for Each Way Extra can be found here.
Industry standard place terms for races with eight or more runners are 1/5 odds for the first three places, 12-15 runners in handicaps are ¼ odds for the first three, and 16+ runners in handicaps are ¼ for the first four places, but customers have the option to select addition places at shorter odds, using the Each-Way Extra tab.
As part of the Racing Value promotion, bet365 offers Bet Boosts, Enhanced Place Terms, Double Result Offer and more. Full details as well as Terms and Conditions can be found here.
Examples:
£10 each-way bet at 5/1, with 1-2-3 places being paid out at 1/5 odds:

Win: £80 (the above calculation + £10 on the 5/1 winner = £60 + £20)
--
£10 each-way bet at Evens with 1-2-3 places being paid out at 1/5 odds:
Place only: £12 (1/5 of Evens = 1/5, multiplied by place stake of £10 = £2, plus £10 place stake being returned for a total return of £12)
Win: £32 (the above calculation + £10 on the Evens winner = £20 + £12)
--
£10 each-way bet at 10/1 with 1-2 places being paid at 1/4 odds:
Place only - £35 (1/4 of 10/1 = 5/2 multiplied by place stake of £10 = £25, plus £10 place stake being returned for a total return of £35)
Win - £145 (the above calculation + £10 on the 10/1 winner = £110 + £35)
