Australian Racing: Berry targeting Winx Stakes glory

There's plenty of Group race action at Randwick on Saturday including the Group 1 Winx Stakes over 1400m plus the Group 2 Darley Silver Shadow Stakes and three Group 3 contests. There are also a number of other meetings including action from Moonee Valley and Doomben.

Mo’unga for Winx success

It’s no surprise to see Anamoe fancied in the market ahead of the feature race of the weekend, the previously mentioned Group 1 Winx Stakes.

James Cummings charge has shown good form at the highest level in the past winning three times in Group 1 company since finishing runner-up in the Golden Slipper Stakes over 1200m in March last year.

Anamoe’s most recent Group 1 victory came by six-and-a-half-lengths in the 2000m Rosehill Guineas on a heavy 9 track at Rosehill in March and while he proved a disappointment when last of nine in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes over the same trip here subsequently he rates a worthy favourite ahead of his four-year-old debut.

Annabel Neasham’s Mo’unga is preferred in this contest however with the son of Savabeel delivering a good second place finish over this 1400m trip in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes on a good 4 track at Caulfield when racing first up last spell.

The five-year-old had just the one subsequent start with that coming when sixth of 14 over this track and trip in the Group 1 All Aged Stake on a heavy 8 surface in April.

Tommy Berry, on board for the All Aged is in the saddle once more and with the selection boasting a solid two from four first up record and having showing a liking for this distance in the past he is taken to register career win number six on his seasonal reappearance.

Crosswinds to stay unbeaten

Foujita San is expected to jump as favourite for the 1200m McKenzie Stakes set to take place as the fifth race on the Moonee Valley card.

The Maurice colt had jockey Jye McNeil in the saddle when breaking his maiden by over five lengths in a five runner 1400m handicap contest at Sandown Lakeside in April. Justified short priced favouritism that day and while he holds strong claims back down in trip the unbeaten Crosswinds can prove too much for the Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes-trained colt.

Crosswinds won both starts last spell following up a victory in a four runner maiden race over 1100m at Ballarat with a length triumph in a race over this course and distance on a good 3 track in March.

Given a break since then the expensive yearling purchase holds entries in the Caulfield Guineas and Golden Rose later in the year and is taken to stay unbeaten with Mark Zahra, on board for both previous starts booked to ride.

Jakama for Doomben triumph

The consistent Get The Idea is sure to have his supporters ahead of the sixth race on the Doomben card, a 1600m Benchmark 80 contest set to take place on a soft 5 track.

Ryan Maloney, on board here took the ride when the gelding finished a good second in a Class 6 contest over 1600m at this track two weeks ago and while the son of So You Think has won just once from six starts this spell it’s of note that he has finished in the first four on all six of those outings including five times at this venue.

John Dann’s Jakama is another consistent gelding and he is selected to get the better of Get The Idea in this competitive looking contest.

Jakama showed good form in winning by a narrow margin in a 1660m event on a soft 5 track at Ipswich in June and the Collate gelding has finished placed on both subsequent starts including when a close second over 1350m at this venue two weeks ago.

The promising claimer Adin Thompson is engaged for the ride here and having run well over further in the past the selection is taken to register career win number seven with a good barrier draw in two a positive in this contest.
