NCAAF: 'Bama snag wideout Burton from Bulldogs

Alabama have snapped up a leading wide receiver from the team who deposed them as national champions earlier this month, signing former Georgia star Jermaine Burton via the transfer portal.

The Crimson Tide, who are 11/5 to be the top dogs of college football next season, have recruited well so far as they bid to keep the 3/1 Bulldogs on a short leash.

Burton helps fill the gaps

The addition of Burton to Alabama's receiving corps should help fill the hole left by NFL-bound 2022 draft prospects Jameson Williams and John Metchie III, who combined for 243 targets last season.

Although he was productive in the College Football Playoffs with three catches for 85 yards and a touchdown, Burton finished the year with just 30 targets - tied with running back James Cook for fourth on the team.

The Bulldogs' offense, which was ranked 51st nationally for passing yards, was nowhere near as explosive as many of its rivals, despite the team winning their first national championship since 1980.

By comparison, Alabama's Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Bryce Young, who is returning for another season, threw for almost 5,000 yards and his team trailed only Western Kentucky for total passing yards.

'Bama recruitment going well

Burton is the third transfer among the top 10 prospects from the portal to choose Alabama, along with former LSU cornerback Eli Ricks and former Georgia Tech running back Jahmyr Gibbs.

The sophomore, who announced his switch of schools on Twitter, finishes his two-year run in Athens with 901 yards receiving, 53 receptions and eight touchdowns.
