Australian Racing: Battle on for Caulfield Guineas

Race 8 Caulfield

Berkeley Square @ 16/5

Race 9 Caulfield

Tuvalu @ 11/5

Race 7 Caulfield

Anamoe @ 6/4

With three Group 1 contests at Caulfield highlighted by the Caulfield Guineas there’s plenty of top class action to look at this Saturday.

Square to claim Guineas

With two reserves also declared a maximum field of 16 looks likely for the feature Group 1 Caulfield Guineas over 1600m at Caulfield.

Golden Mile is expected to jump as favourite here for the James Cummings team with the colt having followed up an impressive victory in the Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality over 1400m on a good 4 track at Rosehill with a solid fourth when prepping for this in the Group 1 Golden Rose over the same course and distance two weeks ago.

The slightly softer surface forecast here should prove no issue given the colt placed in a Group 3 on a soft 6 surface first up this spell with trainer Cummings issuing positive updates with regards to the colts recent workouts.

While untested at Group level Berkeley Square is selected to get the better of James McDonald’s mount here however with the pick having won three of his four previous starts.

The most recent of those came when finishing strongly to deliver a narrow margin victory in the 1400m Exford Plate on a soft 6 surface at Flemington last month.

Dan O’Sullivan’s charge had a number of his rivals here in behind that day including third home Tijuana and fourth placed Elliptical and with the step up in distance looking likely to suit Craig Williams tactically versatile mount is selected to register a victory having drawn barrier seven here.

Tuvalu for Toorak triumph

I Wish I Win is likely to have his supporters ahead of the third of the three Group 1’s on the Caulfield card with the four-year-old having won both starts this spell including by a length in the 1300m Testa Rossa Stakes on the Sandown Hillside track on 25th September.

Justified odds-on favouritism that day and while Luke Nolen’s mount is clearly in good form he has a wide draw to overcome jumping from barrier 13.

Possible pacesetter Tuvalu has drawn the rail here and is selected to deliver a first victory at Group 1 level having followed up two victories over around this trip at Flemington with a solid third place finish in the Group 1 Rupert Clarke Stakes over 1400m on a heavy 9 track at this venue last time out.

Weighted to reverse form with the winner that day Callsign Mav here Jarrod Fry’s mount has shown a liking for wet tracks in the past with two wins and two seconds from four starts on soft going and Jarrod Fry’s mount is selected to register career win number eight from just 13 starts.

Anamoe to complete hat-trick

The seventh race on the Caulfield card, the Group 1 2000m Might And Power Stakes sees Zaaki and Anamoe clash for the first time this season.

Zaaki has shown good form in the wet in the past and he acquitted himself well when finishing a length third in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes on a good 4 track at Sandown Hillside last time out.

Beaten by Alligator Blood on that occasion the veteran performer met with issues in the run having been struck with a rivals whip.

While Annabel Neasham’s charge is expected to reverse form with Alligator Blood, an all the way winner that day the James Cummings-trained Anamoe looks likely to get the better of Jamie Kah’s mount following two top level wins campaign.

Both of Anamoe’s victory this time around have come at the highest level including when winning the George Main over 1600m on a soft 7 track at Randwick last start.

Jumped as a short-priced favourite on that occasion the selection has shown a liking for this trip in the past including when delivering an impressive win in the Rosehill Guineas in March and having starred on this card when winning the Caulfield Guineas 12 months ago he is taken to do so once more with a triumph in the Might And Power.
