Last year’s winner Happy Romance aims to defend his crown for Richard Hannon in the 2022 renewal of the bet365 Hackwood Stakes. No horse has ever won more the race more than once, so Sean Levey’s mount is bidding to become the first. Diligent Harry is here looking for revenge, after finishing a close second in 2021.
The jockey to follow in recent years has been Jim Crowley, winning two of the last four renewals in the famous blue and white silks. He has another chance to add to his tally this weekend, where he rides Minzaal for Owen Burrows.
Just two horses aged three have been declared at Newbury, who will be buoyed by three of the last seven winners all being three-year-olds. The oldest horse to win the race was aged nine back in 1995. In this year’s renewal, both Prisoner’s Dilemma and Chil Chil are the oldest in the race aged six.
In the past 10 years, the race has favoured those at the top of the market with seven winners sub 4/1. There was a shock in 2019 however, with 33/1 Waldpfad landing the race for Germany.
