NFL - US Sports: Bills coach scaling down Allen runs

Head coach Sean McDermott says the Buffalo Bills are looking for quarterback Josh Allen to run less as they attempt to "evolve" their offense in 2022.

Allen, who is 15/2 to win the Regular Season MVP, has totalled over 100 carries in three consecutive seasons and finished last season as the Bills' second-leading rusher behind running back Devin Singletary.

Bills aim to evolve on offense

"Yeah, we want to evolve," McDermott told NFL Network's Judy Battista during an interview at the Annual League Meeting.

"We're always trying to evolve - on the field, off the field, schematically - and in this case with Josh's running or the amount of times that we run him, we have to continue to evolve that way and making sure we're doing right by him by doing right by our team.

"So, we are going to keep a close eye on that. But the one thing we will never take from Josh is his competitive nature and spirit. So, he's gonna do it when he's gonna do it."

While he became only the 10th quarterback in league history to rush for 750 yards in a season, there are a couple of reasons why the Bills might want to curtail his running instincts.

At 6-foot-5, 237 pounds, Allen won't lose many collisions with defensive backs and he even matches up well to some NFL linebackers.

Balancing act for McDermott

However, the 25-year-old is being asked to scale down the amount of punishment his body takes for the long-term benefit of his career

And Allen's passing numbers, while still impressive, were down across the board from the season prior while Buffalo's scoring offense and efficiency diminished.

"I don't know if he likes to take it," McDermott said of the punishment from tacklers. "I don't want to say that. That's a better question for him, but he doesn't shy away from mixing it up from time to time."
