NRL: Bird pens new Dragons deal

Jack Bird has ended speculation over his future with the Dragons by penning a new two-year contract extension.

The Dragons are priced at 11/4 to finish in the top eight of the NRL this season and have been given a boost with the news that Bird is now on board for the foreseeable future.

Bird in the bag

The back-rower was due to hit the open market at the end of the season and there had been interest from rival NRL clubs.
Both Parramatta and the Wests Tigers were said to be sniffing around with a view to signing him from 2023 and beyond.

However Bird has signed on the dotted line and will stay with the Dragons until at least the end of the 2024 campaign. There is also said to be an option to extend the deal until the end of 2025 if all goes well.

Bird delighted

Bird is delighted to have put pen-to-paper on the contract extension following reports that the Dragons had taken the deal off the table during the off-season.

"St George Illawarra is where I first started my career and I'm proud to remain a Dragon," Bird said. "The club gave me the chance to come back and play first grade after all the injuries I faced earlier in my career.

"It has been an opportunity I'm grateful for and one that I have enjoyed over the past 18 months particularly with the support of my family and friends close by."
