Australian Racing - Racing: Cup flame still burning for Cascadian

Cascadian kept his Australian Cup hopes alive yesterday when he won the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes at Randwick.

The James Cummings-trained six-year-old showed his class in the 1800-metre contest to record his first success since last year's Doncaster and is now a 5/1 chance for the Group 1 Australian Cup on 12th March.

With only the six-runner field on show yesterday, the son of New Approach went off the odds-on favourite to add yet another Group race to his CV.

Oliver impressed with ride

Ridden by Damien Oliver, the gelding was a ready half-length winner over Yonkers with a further quarter-length to Emissary in third.

"He's always been a consistent performer and often he just finds one better, but I think he's a genuine horse and I think that is the best he's felt for me today," jockey Oliver said after winning a sixth Peter Young Stakes.

"I wanted to be a little bit positive, but I didn't want to take him out of his comfort zone.

"I thought I'd end up in the box seat where I did and then it was just a matter of getting out when I needed to.

"It was a little bit reliant on luck getting to the turn but once I was able to fade across their heels and get into the clear, I was quietly confident and he quickened nicely."
