Collingwood will be without Jordan De Goey for the trial match against Hawthorn due to a rib injury but are hopeful he will be back in full training next week.
The Magpies are priced at 11/2 to win the 2022 AFL grand final and having De Goey fit and available will be key to their chances of making finals and pushing for the flag.
De Goey has been back with Collingwood for the last month but picked up the rib injury in training just over a week ago and the issue has hampered his progress.
The first official trial match of the year against the Hawks on Friday is a no-go for De Goey but the club say the injury is nothing serious and he should be good for round one of the new season.
"Unfortunately he got a broken rib a week or two ago at training," Collingwood assistant coach Hayden Skipworth told reporters on Wednesday.
"He has had a really good (training) block pre that and now it's really focusing on his conditioning and his footy stuff."
De Goey has not been able to train with the main group but he is still being put through some tough sessions and will be ready to fire in trial match against GWS.
"We put him through the paces today, another big (training session) on Friday and then hopefully he will be straight back in for the GWS game the week after," Skipworth added.
"If all goes well with his rehab that is the plan to get him back for that game. We have got a big one (training session) Friday, it will be non-contact and then next week will be building his contact progression throughout the week."
