The West Coast Eagles have been hit by the news Oscar Allen has picked up a stress fracture in his foot and could miss the opening to the 2022 AFL campaign.
The Eagles are priced at 11/10 to finish in the top eight of the AFL in the new season and Allen will be key to their chances of having a strong season.
Allen has been struggling with soreness in his foot for the last couple of weeks but the Eagles hoped that some rest would fix the problem.
Time away from the track did not solve the issue and scans have since revealed he has a stress fracture in the foot that requires him to be in a moon boot for the next three weeks.
Eagles star forced into retirement
West Coast are unable to put a date on his return to training but he faces a big battle to make round one of the new AFL campaign.
"Unfortunately, Oscar’s injury means he will wear a moon boot for the next three weeks before building his training loads again," Eagles football manager Gavin Bell said.
"While it is disappointing for Oscar and the club, no doubt he will complete his return to play program with the level of professionalism and diligence we have come to expect from him."
Allen's role in the side is even more important due to the absence Jack Darling, while small forward Jamie Cripps is also facing a spell on the sidelines with a torn pectoral.
The Eagles begin their season against the Gold Coast Suns at Optus Stadium on 20th March and coach Adam Simpson already has a host of selection issues.
