West Coast Eagles are sweating on the fitness of Elliot Yeo, Dom Sheed and Campbell Chesser after they picked up ankle injuries in the heavy loss to Fremantle.
The Eagles are priced at 13/10 to finish in the top eight of the AFL in 2022 but had a Friday to forget after picking up the injuries in a 93-point loss against the Dockers.
All three players picked up the injuries in the first half of the game and coach Adam Simpson now faces an anxious wait to discover the full extent of the damage.
Scans are required and Simpson did not sound too optimistic when quizzed by reporters after the game.
"They don’t look great. They all need scans," Simpson said. "So all lower leg injuries, unfortunately first 10 minutes we lose a couple and then Yeo as well. "I think all three boys are pretty similar. But I couldn’t tell exactly. We’re holding out hope, put it that way."
Meanwhile Simpson put the injuries down to pure bad luck and refused to blame the pitch or anything they have been doing in training.
It is a worrying situation for the Eagles though as they were already light on numbers before the practice match against Freo.
"We’re having a bad run at the moment. Thinking for round one, obviously concern for availability and personnel, trying to get a team," Simpson added. "I don’t think we can blame the ground. I don’t think we can blame anyone. I think it’s just unfortunate luck at the moment.
"It’s not a heap of soft tissue injuries or something (wrong) that we’re doing in the gym. It’s just these collision injuries that happen in football and we’ve just got a cluster at the moment."
