Parramatta Eels have confirmed Haze Dunster suffered a season-ending knee injury during the pre-season trial against the Dragons on Sunday.
The Eels are priced at 12/1 to win the 2022 NRL grand final but they have already lost a player before the season has begun following the news Dunster is out.
Dunster was left in agony following a hip-drop tackle by St George Illawarra forward Tyrell Fuimaono and the Eels have now confirmed their worst fears.
The Eels have issued a statement on their club website and say Dunster will play no part in the 2022 season.
"Haze Dunster has been ruled out for the 2022 season following confirmation he has sustained ruptures to his anterior, medial and posterior ligaments (ACL, MCL and PCL) in his knee during last night’s trial," the statement read.
"Haze will undergo surgery in the coming days and then will begin an extended rehabilitation period. The Parramatta Eels are fully supporting Haze in his efforts to returning to the field in 2023."
Fuimaono is now looking at a lengthy seven-match ban for the incident after the match review committee issued a grade three dangerous contact charge.
The second rower could get away with a five-game ban if he puts in an early guilty plea, but that could go out to seven if he takes it to the judiciary hearing and loses.
