Horse Racing: Frodon takes on Leopardstown challenge

Frodon will be the sole British-trained representative in Saturday's Irish Gold Cup at Leopardstown and bids to extend the excellent recent record of Paul Nicholls in Ireland.

Nicholls has won with his last three runners in Ireland, including Frodon's memorable, battling win against Minella indo and Galvin in Down Royal's Champion Chase in October.

The ten-year-old, 5/2 to win the Irish Gold Cup, could only manage fourth in the King George VI Chase at Kempton in December when unsuccessfully attempting to defend his crown, but is set to take on the best of the Irish at the Dublin Racing Festival for the first time.

Bryony Frost is set to maintain the flourishing partnership and Frodon was among nine confirmations for Saturday's Grade 1 contest.

His opposition could include Kemboy (5/2), winner of the race 12 months ago and third behind Galvin and A Plus Tard in the course's Savills Chase at Christmas.

Last season's Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Minella Indo (3/1) is also in contention, while Asterion Forlonge and 2020 Irish Gold Cup victor Delta Work are others who could figure.

Vogt expecting a tough time

Paul Vogt, owner of Frodon said: "This has been the plan for months for Frodon. The ground should be suitable and Paul thinks it's the right race for him.

"It's going to be tough - it will be interesting to see which of the Irish-trained runners are going to turn up - but we're looking forward to giving it a crack."

He added: "He's retained all his old enthusiasm and certainly proved that at Down Royal on his penultimate start. He's quite lively at the yard, too, and he travels well, so we're hopeful of a big performance."
