Championship: Fulham's Aleksandar Mitrovic 7/1 to score 50+ goals

Aleksandar Mitrovic’s winner at Hull took him to 31 Championship goals for the season, equalling Ivan Toney’s record haul in the process, and bet365 are just 7/1 the Serbian brings up the half century during the 2021/22 campaign.

The next time a list of the greatest Championship sides is put together, or a ‘greatest ever Championship XI’ is named, you’ll likely see “Fulham 2021/22” and “Aleksandar Mitrovic”.

Seeing the ease with which Mitrovic breezed past the 30-goal mark, it seems hard to believe it hasn’t been done more; Ivan Toney hit 31 last season - though under its old guise of the First Division, Guy Whittingham smashed 42 back in 1992/93.

Remarkably, Mitrovic, who finished as the Championship’s Top Goalscorer in 2020 with 26, still has a third of the campaign to play.

In recent years we’ve seen quality strikers like Abraham, Watkins, Pukki and Armstrong break the 20-goal barrier and then Toney trumped them all with 31, but Mitrovic has taken it to a whole new level.

Mitrovic has failed to score in just eight of 28 games this season, and Fulham’s four defeats were all when the Serbian blanked.

In the 20 games he has scored in, he’s found the net 31 times. There have been hat-tricks against Swansea, West Brom and Bristol City; braces against Birmingham, QPR, Nottingham Forest, Reading and Millwall.

While no other Fulham player has reached 10 this season, it would be unfair to say Mitrovic is single-handedly taking the Cottagers back to the Premier League.

After 18 goal contributions for Derby and then Cardiff, with 10 Premier League goals in his solitary season at Bournemouth, Harry Wilson is maturing into wonderful footballer with another 18 goal contributions so far, with 16 games of the season still to play.

Neeskens Kebano has finally found his place at Craven Cottage with eight goals and five assists from the left wing. And of course there’s a certain Fabio Carvalho, whose performances seem to have earned him a summer move to Liverpool, the Reds having failed to secure his signature on deadline day.

It will be interesting to see how Mitrovic gets on next season, assuming he’s playing Premier League football with Fulham. His first two full seasons in the top flight brought about nine goals for Newcastle and 11 goals for Fulham, before falling out of favour under Scott Parker last season, where he managed just three.

They’ve still to see out this season, though. Twelve points clear of QPR, it’s a matter of when and by how many.

While Reading’s record haul of 106 points looks to remain intact for another season – Fulham need 43 points from 16 games to break it; 14 wins and draw would do it – Manchester City’s record goal tally is well within reach.

Kevin Keegan’s free-scoring Citizens scored 108 in 2001/02, while Marco Silva’s side need 31 – fewer than two a game – to break it.

Mitrovic will also be looking to see how far he can go. Having broken past the 30-goal barrier, 40 will be next in his sights; is 50 too much to ask?

50 goals sounds ridiculous considering it’s more than many teams manage across a full season (averaging 4.55 shots a game, he's scored more than Barnsley, Peterborough and Hull), but he’s averaging 1.15 goals per 90, and if he keeps that record up and plays every minute of Fulham’s remaining 16 games, he’ll find himself on 49. It would be a ridiculous achievement, and one we may never see again, but it’s not out of his reach.
