Horse Racing - Racing: Gentleman De Mee eyeing famous double

Gentleman De Mee's awesome Aintree display in the Maghull Novices' Chase to beat Arkle winner Edwardstone could see him land a famous double when he takes to the track again at Punchestown on Thursday.

The six year old runs in the Barberstown Castle Novice Chase and is a 5/4 favourite to repeat his Aintree trick with bet365, meaning he could replicate the feats of Douvan, who also landed the Aintree-Punchestown double in 2016 though that came after winning at Cheltenham to boot.

Willie Mullins, who often uses Punchestown as his own personal playground, is looking for a stunning seventh win in a row in this race and is responsible for four of the seven runners in the field including the favourite who is running just 19 days after his Aintree exploits. Gabynako out to challenge Mullins' stars

Blue Lord, beaten by Edwardstone in the Arkle, lines up while Saint Sam and Haut En Couleurs complete the Mullins team.

Gabynako, a superb second in the Arkle, is a challenger to the Mullins brigade while Henry de Bromhead saddles Coeur Sublime and outsider Maskadza.

Champion Jockey-elect Paul Townend, who will ride Blue Lord, believes there isn't much difference between his mount and Gabynako but Gentlemen De Mee's inclusion means a "straightforward" race could be on the cards.

Townend said: "Gentleman De Mee adds a lot of spice to the race. He likes to get on with it in front, as he did at Aintree. He's an improving horse who goes a gallop and should make it a straightforward race.

"Saint Sam came down early in the Arkle but ran a cracker behind Blue Lord at Leopardstown before that. Haut En Couleurs ran well in the Arkle for a long way but finished weakly so he's on a bit of a retrieval mission."
