Australian Racing: Gibbons out to Poach a win

We’ve three provincial meetings at Hawkesbury, Pinjarra and Rockhampton plus a country fixture at Echuca to get involved with this Thursday.

Poacher for Hawkesbury triumph

In the second race at Hawkesbury, an 1100m Class 1 handicap Acappella Sun and The Poacher vying for favouritism.

The former showed good form on a wet track when winning by three lengths in an 1100m handicap at Mudgee back in May and duly followed that effort up with a good fourth in the Vinery Woodlands Stakes over the same distance at Scone on a heavy 8 surface six days later.

Dylan Gibbons returns to the saddle having ridden when runner-up in a maiden at Kembla Grange three starts back but it’s of note that all of the daughter of Sebring Sun’s starts so far have come on heavy tracks and while she drops in grade here preference is for the Hugh Bowman ridden The Poacher.

The Poacher carries top weight racing first up here having broken his maiden in a 1200m event on a good 4 track at Goulburn back in February. Had to defy a slow break and a draw in ten when making most of the running that day and with a good barrier draw in two here the four-year-old is taken to double his career tally for trainer Brad Widdup.

Fradd to partner Machinate to glory

Top weight Deep Breath is expected to jump as favourite for the concluding race on the Rockhampton card, a 1500m Benchmark 70 contest.

Nick Walsh’s gelding completed a five-timer, with four of those victories coming at this venue when triumphing by a narrow margin over 1600m here in May and while he’s acquitted himself well in three subsequent starts, including when fourth over 1600m here last month he may find the concession of a significant amount of weight to Robbie Fradd’s mount Machinate too much.

A wide draw should prove no issue for Machinate given he doesn’t have to lead and Fradd should be able to slot his mount in behind the leaders in this event.

Machinate boasts some good form this spell including when winning twice with the most recent of those successes coming by a length in a Benchmark 70 contest over 1560 at Mackay last month.

Handles the softer ground forecast here and is taken to provide trainer Clinton Taylor with a winner in what looks a competitive affair.

Deal can score for McGruddy

In the penultimate race on the Pinjarra card Let’sdeal looks capable of delivering a third career success for trainer Steve Wolfe.

The selection has delivered wins first up in both starts so far including by one-and-a-half-lengths on a good 3 track in a 1200m Class 2 event at Mt Baker back in January.

The son of Dundeel contested much stronger races this this subsequently and placed third in the 1500m Morley Market Challenge Stakes, a metro race at Ascot on his next start.

While that third place finish was Steve Wolfe’s charges only subsequent placed efforts it’s notable that he jumped at big odds in three of his four subsequent starts and even contested the Group 2 W.A.T.C Derby over 2400m at Ascot in April.

The shorter distance here looks more to his liking and while top weight Prize Pursuit is race fit having had three starts this spell including when winning over 1400m at Northam on his penultimate outing Shaun McGruddy’s mount is expected to have too much for the five-year-old.
