Aussie Rules: Hawkins excited ahead of new season

Tom Hawkins is expecting even more from his partnership with Jeremy Cameron in the 2022 AFL campaign as Geelong once again push for premiership glory.

The Cats are priced at 15/1 to win the 2022 AFL grand final and the combination of Hawkins and Cameron will be crucial to their chances.

Cameron feeling fit

The duo combined to boot 101 goals between them last season and that was with Cameron having injury issues following his high-profile move from Greater Western Sydney.

Hawkins kicked 62.37, Cameron 39.16 but the latter recently said he is feeling fitter than ever after a strong pre-season.

Combine that with the fact the duo have had more time to gel in training and it is easy to see why Hawkins is feeling positive ahead of the new season.

"It's been well documented that Jeremy had his issues last year with injuries and we had that through our whole list at certain periods," Hawkins told reporters.

"It always takes a little bit of time to create chemistry and getting used to a player who plays the game very differently to me just takes time. But we've been able to train together (over summer) along with Esava (Ratugolea), Tyson Stengle and a range of other players as well. We look forward to the challenge that the season presents."

Experience still crucial

Once again much is being made of the fact that the Cats will field one of the oldest teams in the comp but Hawkins sees it as a positive rather than a negative.

"I don't know where we sit within the competition and that's what we're going to find out within the first few rounds," Hawkins added.

"We've had a wonderful pre-season but 17 other clubs say the same thing, so we'll find out once we start.

"But we're really confident that we've got the list to be able to not only compete but challenge the best sides in the competition."
