Trainer Bernie Hewitt believes Winona Writer has what it takes to achieve more Group 1 glory for his stable when she takes to the track at Wagga on Easter Saturday.
Hewitt is riding the crest of a wave after enjoying his most successful night as a trainer at Bathurst last month.
Gold Tiara and Gold Chalice secured him a feature double and he is hoping to keep the good times rolling with Winona Writer this weekend.
Winona Writer will contest the $100,000 Ladex Riverina Championships Mares final after securing qualification last Sunday evening.
Rattray upbeat over Sunny Sanz
Hewitt’s charge showed what blistering pace she has during the heat. She wrapped up a half-head win over the favourite Yarraman Bella, rating 1:57.1 for the 2270-metre journey. So it is no surprise that Hewitt is optimistic ahead of the final.
Hewitt is sure that his charge will be better for that hit-out and will run a good race in the final.
“She is a lovely mare who proved on Sunday that she can mix it with the best of them,” Hewitt told reporters ahead of the race. “To do what she did first-up on Sunday was very pleasing and it gives me confidence going into the final.
“I do think Anntonia, who won the other heat, will be hard to beat. She is such a professional racemare and has been at the top of her game ever since she first raced.
“But you have to be in it to win it and I believe my mare is a real chance.”
