NRL: Holbrook praises resolute Titans

Gold Coast coach Justin Holbrook praised the resilience of his side as they hung on to claim a 20-18 win over the New Zealand Warriors.

The Titans are priced at 25/1 to win the NRL grand final and picked up their first win of the season thanks to a gritty performance at CBUS Super Stadium.

Close finish

The Titans were leading 16-6 at one point before the Warriors came fighting back to take the game right to the wire.

However the Titans defence held firm and Holbrook says the way his side dug in to secure the win should give them confidence for the rest of the season.

"I don't think we won a tight game last year so I think it's great and a credit to, in particular, our forwards, through the pre-season to get themselves in a better spot to be able to work harder," Holbrook told reporters after the game. "That's what we need. That willingness to defend."

Holbrook also praised the performance of AJ Brimson after the Titans No.6 ran the show in the halves.

"It was great to have AJ back," Holbrook added. "That's what the whole team's been witnessing all pre-season, just AJ being fantastic and everything. To have him back is a huge bonus for us."

Brown fuming

The Warriors have now lost both of their opening games and coach Nathan Brown was far from happy as his side failed to take their chances.

"Not good enough if you want to win games. We're way past trying to develop players, we want to win bloody games of footy and that's just not acceptable," Brown added.

"We had two young outside backs drop the ball on the line, just purely and simply because they just didn't get deep enough. Again, not acceptable. Not now where we want to be as a football club."
