Australian Racing: Julius chasing hat-trick

With a total of eight meetings today there’s plenty of racing to get stuck into including metropolitan action at Devonport Synthetic.

Take Julius to complete hat-trick

In the eighth at Devonport Synthetic there will be plenty in the Sharma Rama camp with the four-year-old coming into this on the back of a hat-trick including over 1100m on a soft 7 surface at Hobart in May.

Freshened up since the mare has jockey Erica Byrne Burke up again and gets in off a light weight in this 1150m contest.

Preference on this occasion however is for Julius, the mount of Anthony Darmanin. The rider has been on board for the geldings two most recent outings with both of those efforts resulting in wins over this course and distance including in a Benchmark 68 contest last month. Made all the running that day and is taken to deliver further success for a trainer in Barry Campbell who does well at this venue.

Atonement for Prelude success

The Westlawn Grafton Cup Prelude, the fifth race on the card and due to be held on a good 4 track over 2230m is one of nine races set to take place at Grafton with Bold Contender looking likely to jump as favourite following two wins on soft surfaces.

Saw off six rivals in a 2015m contest at Coffs Harbour recently and backing up quickly is looking to register a third win in a month.

Among his rivals here is the four-year-old Atonement who showed signs that a win might not be far away when beaten less than two lengths in finishing fifth in a 1900m Benchmark 72 event on a heavy 9 track at Canterbury last start.

Has shown good form on sound surfaces having won twice in Benchmark 64 contests on good 4 tracks in January while this step up in trip is no issue with one of those January triumphs coming over 2600m.

Yet to appear at this venue but hoop Ashley Morgan knows what it takes to win here and the Dundeel mare looks up to resuming winning ways.

Spirit to break maiden

In the fourth at Kilcoy Tomboy’s Spirit looks capable of delivering a winning effort following three placed outings at Toowoomba this spell.

The most recent of those efforts came when finishing third in an 1100m maiden under today’s rider Isabella Rabjones two weeks ago. Is versatile tactics wise having been ridden from off the pace prior to placing second in a ten runner contest over the same track and trip prior and while she has yet to start on a heavy 8 track she is proven on a soft 7 and given her tactical versatility a wide draw in barrier 13 shouldn’t prove too much of an issue with Bold Rumble for in form trainer Garnett Taylor rating the biggest danger on the back of a third place finish on a good 4 surface at Sunshine Coast.
