Aussie Rules: King pens new Gold Coast deal

Gold Coast ace Ben King has put an end to speculation regarding his future by signing a two-year contract extension with the Suns.

Gold Coast are priced at 11/2 to finish in the top eight and play finals in 2022 but will have to do it without King after he was ruled out with a serious knee injury.

Committed to the cause

King is originally from Melbourne and rumours have been rife suggesting he could look to return there with a host of clubs from Victoria known to be keen. Including Essendon and St Kilda.

However coach Stuart Dew says he always got the impression the tall forward was happy with the Suns and is delighted to keep him until at least the end of the 2024 campaign.

Miller named Suns co-captain

"Some people can move beyond that really quickly, and I remember a chat we had with Ben on the morning of the draft," Dew told reporters. "He said 'I'm going to come up and give you everything I've got'.

"As soon as he said that I thought 'we've got someone special here'. He wasn't coming here to kill time, he was coming to make an impact."

King excited

The deal comes at a good time to give everyone a lift after the 21-year-old ruptured his ACL in training last month and will now sit out the rest of this season.

King says he is excited for the future and is delighted to have penned the new deal.

"I've been thinking about it for the last year or so and there was never really any doubt to commit to the Suns," he said. "I've been very lucky from the start in that I feel very well supported by the club and have a great group of mates up on the Gold Coast.

"The aim is to play finals and has been for the last couple of years. I think it's definitely within reach. I love the club and I'm really confident in the direction the club's heading."
