Richard Litt's exciting colt Profondo is on target for his big first-up assignment in next month's Randwick Guineas after the three-year-old was seen for the first time this year when taking part in a star studded trial at Warwick Farm on Monday.
A winner of two of his three starts to date, most recently when taking out the Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick back in October, Profondo is rated a 7/2 chance to make a winning return in the Group 1 contest over 1600 metres on 5th March. He warmed up for that date by finishing three and a quarter lengths behind Group 1-winning sprint Wild Ruler in a heat which also included the likes of Forbidden Love, Zaaki and Mo'unga.
"It was an excellent trial from him, I was very happy," Litt told Racing NSW. "We didn't want to do too much because we knew the track was a little bit soft so we didn't want to gut him in his first trial. For a first trial I was extremely happy.
"He's got a wonderful temperament, he was very good even though he was fresh. I was a little bit worried he'd come out bouncing but once the rider was on his back he was excellent."
Looking ahead, the trainer continued: "He'll have another trial in two weeks over 1200 metres. A nice few easy days going into the Randwick Guineas and that should be perfect for him. I think the mile for him first-up is perfect.
"He's in wonderful order, we've got a lot to work with, he's grown and strengthened and is a really happy horse. He's come back with a developed personality which is really good."
A $1.9million purchase as a yearling, Profondo sits second in the Caulfield Guineas betting behind Anamoe, who is currently priced at 8/5 for James Cummings and the Godolphin team.
