Australian Football: Margush error costs Wanderers

Western Sydney Wanderers boss Mark Rudan says they will rally around Daniel Margush after the goalkeeper’s late error cost them a crucial three points against Brisbane Roar.

The Wanderers had hopes of finishing in the top six of the A-League and the dropped points against Roar will harm their chances.

Margush error

Western Sydney looked on course for a crucial three points courtesy of a Jack Hingert own goal but some late drama saw the visitors level matters at Commbank Stadium.

Roar were also down to 10 men at the time when Margush brought down Alex Parsons in the penalty area in the 89th minute after trying to stop his initial clumsy touch going out for a corner.

Margush was sent off and then Jay O’Shea stepped up to fire home the penalty to earn the Roar a point.

"It was tough to take, it's disappointing clearly," Wanderers boss Mark Rudan said after the game. "We need to get around Daniel - we all make mistakes. It's unfortunate that we couldn't see the game out and pick up all three points.

"I'm sure he knows what happens but we need to make sure he's in a good head space."

Top six hopes fade

Western’s chances of making the top six now look slim. They sit nine points away from the top six with the games fast running out.

"It makes it tougher," Rudan added. "We keep fighting all the way to the end and that's just the way it has to be."
