Aussie Rules: Martin could face the Pies

Richmond Tigers coach Damien Hardwick is hopeful Dustin Martin will return to action in next week’s clash against Collingwood at the MCG.

The Tigers hope to make finals this season and will be handed a massive boost if Martin can return to the side sooner rather than later.

West Coast flogging

Richmond smashed the Eagles by 109 points at Optus Stadium on Friday night but Martin was missing as he works his way back to being match-ready following a five-week break away from the game.

Martin remains the hot topic and Hardwick was again quizzed about his potential return after the win over the Eagles. And all being well, the clash against the Pies could be a goer.

"I'm hopeful," Hardwick told reporters after the win. "He trained well today; he had a good session. Got through that well.

"We have to get some more skill sessions into him. We're hopeful he'll put his hand up to play. We have to do due diligence to make sure he is ready to go when he's needed."

Happy with the win

Meanwhile Hardwick was clearly pleased with the win in the west but was also quick to point out that the Eagles are going through some strife at the moment.

"You have to understand where our opponent is at," he added. "They have had a horrible, horrible run.

"But it was good. We played a good brand of footy; looked like a Richmond game. We were pretty strong on all facets in the game."
