Forward Auston Matthews says the Toronto Maple Leafs are focused on the next step in their progression, which is success in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The Leafs, 17/2 to win the Stanley Cup, needed two goals from 24-year-old Matthews in a 3-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday to cement their spot in the all-important post-season competition.
Matthews leads the NHL in goals for a second campaign in a row, tallying 58 in just 67 games this season. He also has 41 assists for a total of 99 points.
The Leafs superstar has recorded an outstanding 31 points (21 goals, 10 assists) during a 16-game point streak.
In his past 51 games, Matthews has scored 50 times, the best goal-scoring form of any NHL player since Mario Lemieux hit 51 in 50 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins from October 1995 to March 1996.

With a 47-19-6 record, the Leafs currently sit second in the Atlantic Division and will again attempt to win a play-off series for the first time since 2004 when the post-season rolls around.
Matthews is in a fifth season with Toronto and has amassed 450 points (257 goals, 193 assists) in 401 regular season games, while in the play-offs the 6'3" centre has scored 24 points (13 goals, 11 assists) in 32 appearances.
Matthews said to the media: "This season has been continued progression for us and I think this last segment or so, we’ve been playing some pretty good hockey and we just want to keep that going and into the play-offs."
