The Sydney Swans have handed Paddy McCartin a career lifeline after snapping him up as a rookie in the pre-season supplemental selection period.
The Swans are priced at 10/1 to win the 2022 AFL grand final and believe McCartin could have a key role to play in the season ahead.
McCartin has not played in the AFL since 2018 after a series of concussions resulted in him stepping away from the game completely.
But the 25-year-old never gave up on his dream of returning to the game he loves and last year played second-tier footy in the VFL for the Swans.
Franklin set sights on round one
He impressed as a defender and after training with the Swans throughout the summer, the 2014 No.1 draft pick will get another crack at the AFL in 2022.
To make it even more special he will join brother Tom at the Swans and is hoping to build on the 35 games he played for St Kilda.
"It’s extremely exciting – it’s been a unique journey for me to get back to this point," McCartin revealed after the deal was announced.
"It’s a path that not many people have taken, but my goal was to always try and get back to the elite level and to be able to do it with the Swans."
Swans football boss Charlie Gardiner has saluted the player for battling back when his career looked to be in danger and says he fully deserves his second chance.
"At just 25 years of age, Paddy still has plenty of footy left to play, and his rejoining the senior list will provide the club with the flexibility of another tall option who can play at either end of the ground," Gardiner said.
"We’re looking forward to seeing what Paddy can deliver this season. We know he and Tom are excited about the opportunity to continue training and playing together."
