Australian Racing - Racing: Melbourne Cup goal for Knights Order

The riches of November's Melbourne Cup are the long range target for Knights Order following the seven-year-old's breakthrough Group 1 win in Saturday's Sydney Cup.

Trained by Gai Waterhouse in partnership with Adrian Bott, Knights Order, whose weekend win was his first success since taking out the Group 2 Brisbane Cup back in June, can be backed at 50/1 for the Flemington showpiece on the first Tuesday in November, which will be available on the Sports Live Streaming platform.

Impressive victory

The seven-year-old made all the running under Rachel King on testing ground at Randwick on Saturday and came home ahead of Sheraz and Daqiansweet Junior.

Now the winner on eight of his 26 starts, Knights Order contested last year's running of the Melbourne Cup where he finished down the field when well beaten behind Verry Elleegant, having led throughout the early part of the race as one of the outsiders.

After his fine run on Saturday, Waterhouse is now looking ahead to later in the year and the Melbourne Cup, where the soft ground could play its part.

"He'll go to the paddock and have a little shoot the breeze until the spring, where he'll come back and head to Melbourne for the Cup," Waterhouse, who was winning her third Sydney Cup, told Racing.com.

"It takes a great deal of ability to be able to time leading all the way perfectly, very few jockeys can lead and win, and to lead over two miles is a great credit to the jockey and the horse.

"If it's wet on (Melbourne) Cup Day, which it has been before, he might give it a real shake. The soft ground really plays in his favour."
