New York Mets pitcher Max Scherzer will miss up to eight weeks after an MRI revealed a 'moderate to high grade' oblique strain after the 11-4 victory over the St Louis Cardinals on Wednesday night.
Scherzer is 5/1 to win the National League Cy Young Award, with the 37-year-old having already won the award three times.
The Mets are already without their superstar pitcher Jacob DeGrom who has missed the entire season to date with a shoulder injury picked up in Spring Training - DeGrom is not due back till at least July and it's expected Scherzer will be about the same time.
It was Scherzer who removed himself from the game with two outs in the sixth inning after feeling soreness in his left side with the hope of preventing a more serious injury.
Speaking after the game, Scherzer said to MLB.com: "Just felt a zing on my left side and just knew I was done. When I felt it, I just knew there's no way you can throw another pitch, so just get out of there."

The Missouri native has improved his record this season to 5-1 with a 2.54 ERA, his first with the Mets after signing a three-year, $130million contract in the off-season.
Starter Tyler McGill is also on the injured list with biceps tendinitis after compiling a 2.43 ERA through his first six starts of the season.
David Peterson - who has a 1-0 start with a 1.89 ERA in three starts with one relief appearance - will probably be called up from Triple-A Syracuse to join a rotation that includes Chris Bassitt (4-2, 2.34 ERA), Carlos Carrasco (3-1, 3.73 ERA) and Taijuan Walker (1-0, 3.52 ERA).
