NCAAF - US Sports: Miami coach confident of handling blue-chip QBs

Miami head coach Mario Cristobal says "honesty and transparency" will help him handle one of the deepest quarterback rooms in college football in this era of player power and increased use of the transfer portal.

Miami, 7/1 to win the ACC Championship, are set to officially turn the offense over to third-year sophomore Tyler Van Dyke, who stepped into the starting role when D'Eriq King was injured halfway through the 2021 season.

Competition for starting role

But they also have two highly-rated freshmen on their roster with Jake Garcia, who redshirted last season after an ankle injury, and Jacurri Brown - another recent four-star recruit to the program.

It's Van Dyke's position to lose really after he showed enough to potentially develop into a first-round selection in the next draft, throwing for 2,194 yards and 20 touchdowns against only three interceptions in the final six games to earn the ACC's Rookie of the Year honour.

He was the first quarterback since Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow to throw for more than 300 yards and three touchdowns in six straight games - a streak that he will carry into the Hurricanes' season opener against the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats on 3rd September.

Honesty the best approach

Cristobal is aware of the challenges he will face by keeping talented teenagers in reserve when outside influences are telling them to move elsewhere if they can't establish themselves in the team almost from the first moment they arrive on campus.

"Do it with honesty and transparency. That's not difficult," he told 247Sports.com.

"The result has been great so far. You got two guys that are competing and one guy that has really established himself (Van Dyke) and another guy coming off of injury (Garcia) that has a super future."
