Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell knows success will not happen over night but he is looking for signs of improvement when the Hawks get their season underway.
Mitchell will take charge of his first game as head coach when Hawthorn face North Melbourne in round one and he is not expecting miracles in 2022.
The Hawks are going through a rebuild and will field their youngest AFL team since 2005 when they take on the Kangaroos.
Having won four premierships as a player under the guidance of the man he has replaced, Alastair Clarkson, Mitchell knows what it takes to win a premiership. And there is no quick fix.
But he wants to see progress and is hoping to see an improvement on Hawthorn's pre-season displays when they face North Melbourne.
"I want to see progress," Mitchell told reporters. "We're looking to be a little bit better than we were in the first couple of (pre-season) games.
"We know where we're going, we know premiership teams aren't built overnight."
The Hawks will be fielding their youngest side in over 15 years, but there is still a splash of experience that all rebuilds need.
Hawthorn are boosted by the return of James Sicily and Jack Gunston after they missed the entire 2021 season through injury.
Captain Ben McEvoy is missing though with Jaeger O'Meara set to skipper the side, while veteran forward Luke Breust is another player that sits out.
