West Coast Eagles coach Adam Simpson warned there is more pain to come after his side suffered a 109-point flogging against Richmond on Friday night.
The Eagles set out to make the top eight this season but sit 1-6 for the campaign and look set for a long and hard 2022.
West Coast have had a tough start to the season when losing players to injury and illness but Simpson was not willing to use that as an excuse. His side have deeper problems and he admits it could take some time to fix.
But unfortunately for the Eagles more pain could be on the way as they face flag fancies Brisbane and Melbourne in their next two games.
"We're clearly not at the level at the moment," Simpson told reporters after the game. "There's so many areas to fix. It's going to take time.
"It's not going to happen in one week, it's going to be a lot of work in front of us. That's with everything we do, our program, our fitness, our style of play, our ball movement. We're on a path. There's going to be a little bit of pain.”
Rebuild is a term commonly used in AFL but the Eagles refuse to use it. Transition is the word they prefer to use but Simpson cannot say how long it will take.
"Several years? I hope not," Simpson added. "No-one wants to be in the situation that we're in right now, but we are.
"The quicker we can accept what's happening and be aware of it and action it, the better we'll get. Regardless of what's happened we are in a period of transition, no doubt.”
