Aussie Rules: Nicks excited for young guns

Adelaide coach Matthew Nicks believes 2022 could be the year his young guns take their game to the next level and show everyone what they are made of.

The Crows are priced at 5/1 to finish in the top eight of the AFL this season and Nicks knows there will need to be a big improvement if they are to play finals footy in 2022.

List overhaul

Adelaide are currently going through a rebuild and for the second season running Nicks will be armed with the youngest list in the competition.

However the talent is there with the likes of gun midfielder Harry Schoenberg showing flashes of brilliance during the 2021 AFL season.

Nicks is now hoping that his young stars can grow even further in the season ahead and play the kind of footy that will get the rest of the AFL talking.

"That's the goal. I'd really like to think our players do show themselves this year and they'll do that by playing really good team footy," Nicks told AFL.com.au.

"We saw a few players do that last year, and there were a couple of names people really started talking about. I hope that we do see some of these younger guys emerge and become names in the AFL.

"We've got a fantastic group of players. They're young, but they've now played together for a couple of years and played 20 or 40-odd games alongside each other."

Pedlar potential

Second-year midfielder Luke Pedlar is another player to look out for according to Nicks, who has been impressed with his application in pre-season.

Pedlar only managed two games last season because of groin issues but is fully fit and ready to go for 2022.

"Luke's in a really good space," Nicks added. "Peds' weapon is that dynamic movement and he is taking his body to a new level. He's been a standout through the last few weeks.

"We're still very mindful of not pushing him too hard, but he's one of those guys who hopefully his name is talked about a little bit through footy circles."
