Aussie Rules: Nicks salutes deserved win

Adelaide Crows coach Matthew Nicks admits it was not the prettiest of wins but much deserved as his side came from behind to beat Port Adelaide in the Showdown on Friday night.

The Crows are an outside shot to finish in the top eight and play finals in 2022 and can take plenty of heart and confidence from the win.

Dawson boots late winner

Adelaide looked on course for defeat as Port lead by two points heading into the dying embers of the game but they were gifted one last opportunity and took it.

It had been a tough week for the Crows who had copped plenty of criticism for their performances so far but Jordan Dawson brought the smiles back with the goal after the siren.

"We really enjoyed this win. This was a good night for our footy club," Nicks told reporters after the game. "It wasn't the prettiest last quarter for us.

"It didn't need to be pretty, it didn't need to be special. Even Daws' kick for goal wasn't that pretty off the boot. I think we were all packing our computers up and walking away thinking it was going out.

"You do the work, you get what you deserve and our guys deserve it tonight."

Murphy praise

Nicks also praised Lachlan Murphy who earned the free-kick that led to Dawson’s goal. Although he was relieved Dawson got the shot.

"Murph knows I'd be lying if I sat here and said I'd rather have Murph kick that set shot than Daws," Nicks laughed.
"He may have come up to me afterwards and said 'I'm glad that one stung me because I'm not sure I kick that one'.”
