Australian Football: Nix bounce back with shock win

Wellington Phoenix got their push for the top six back on track with a 4-1 victory over Western United on Saturday.

The Nix are pushing to finish in the top six and play finals and the victory over Western should give them a big confidence boost after a rough couple of weeks.

Bounced back in style

Wellington went in to the game on the back of heavy losses against Melbourne City and Central Coast Mariners. They conceded a combined 11 goals and were badly in need of a good result in Ballarat.

That is exactly what they got. Ufuk Talay’s men were 3-0 up by half-time thanks to goals from Scott Wootton, Jaushua Sotirio and Walter Sandoval.

Steven Lustica pulled one back for the shell-shocked home side on 54 minutes before Sotirio grabbed his second to put the game to bed.

Talay delight

The result was out of the blue considering the previous two games and the fact Western are second on the ladder and usually have a tight defence.

"We learn from our mistakes," Talay said. "Not the way I wanted to learn, conceding 11 goals in two games, but sometimes that needs to happen.

"Western United are a very good team, they defend well and we wanted them to come out so we could expose them in transition, and I think we did that very well today."

The win takes the Nix to sixth place on the ladder and they also have games in hand.
