Australian Racing - Racing: Raider aims to back up in Oaks

Jerome Hunter has been keeping a close eye on how Barb Raider has shaped up since winning the Group 2 The Roses on Saturday and sees no reason not to press onto the Queensland Oaks this weekend.

The filly looks almost certain to take her place in the $700,000 Group 1 contest over 2200 metres at Eagle Farm, for which she is currently a 8/1 chance. You can follow the action via our Sports Live Streaming platform.

"She's really done well," Hunter told Bensley on SENTrack. "It's only going to be a seven-day turnaround, but we're certainly positive that she's pulled up well.

"She's gone for a trot and canter this morning and she's been eating up, so it's like the same girl she was before any other race."

The Roses is normally run at Doomben a fortnight before the Oaks but has been run just a week out from the Queensland feature this year due to the abandonment of the Doomben Cup meeting on 21st May.

Hunter provides prep update

Barb Raider will be looking to join Ethereal, Scarlett Lady and Youngstar as the fillies to complete The Roses and Oaks double and Hunter is confident that the 2200-metre trip of the Oaks will help her to handle the back-up.

"I pulled up stumps with her last preparations because I just felt she wasn't mature enough as an early three-year-old," Hunter said.

"She's got another six months under her belt and she's really thrived with the 2000 and the 2100 (runs), so another 100 metres is definitely not a concern."
