NFL - US Sports: Rodgers to retire a Packer

In doubt as recently as March, Aaron Rodgers says he plans to finish his career with the Green Bay Packers but the 38-year-old can't tell when he's likely to ride into the sunset.

Rodgers, 9/1 to take his third regular-season MVP award in a row after the 2022 season, skipped the Packers' mandatory minicamp last year while at loggerheads with the organisation.

But a three-year contract extension worth $150.8 million and $101.5 million in guaranteed money smoothed things over.

When asked whether he planned to finish his career with the only team he has ever played for in the NFL, Rodgers responded: "Yes, definitely".

Rodgers not committing to date

He says the contract length shouldn't be taken as an indicator of when his storied NFL career will come to an end and says he will take it season by season.

"If you say I'm for sure playing two more, three years and then you have a magical season that ends with a championship and think that that might be the best way to ride off, I don't want to commit to something," Rodgers said, via ESPN.

"You say, I'm only playing one more year and you have a bitter taste in your mouth and still got the drive and the passion to play one or two more years, I just don't want to get pigeonholed into it."

New approach needed for Packers

The offseason defection of former top target Davante Adams to the Las Vegas Raiders has weakened the Packers' receiving corps heading into the 2022 season.

But Green Bay acquired Sammy Watkins as a free agent and drafted Christian Watson (second round), Romeo Doubs (fourth round) and Samori Toure (seventh round) to bolster depth at the position.

"The offense has to change," Rodgers added. "Last year, when you have a guy who's that talented, it's probably not an exaggeration to say that 80% of the plays in the passing game were designed specifically for 17, so we're obviously gonna do some things a little different."
