NRL: Roosters star to fight for future

Sydney Roosters hooker Sam Verrills says he is ready to fight for his future with the club ahead of the arrival of Melbourne Storm ace Brandon Smith at the end of the season.

The Roosters are priced at 6/1 to win the 2022 NRL grand final and Verrills has a big role to play as the Bondi outfit push for silverware this season.

Verrills ready to battle

Verrills currently occupies the No.9 jersey in Trent Robinson’s side but it will be under threat in 2023 following the news Smith is on his way to the club.

Robinson worked hard to convince Smith to join the Roosters and he is expected to go straight in to the side when he finally arrives next year.

Even so Verrills says he will not hand the jersey over just like that and he will use the rest of this season to prove his worth to the Roosters. And that can only be a good thing as they push for honours.

"I know he's coming. I'm not silly. I know he's coming," Verrills told Channel Nine’s Wide World of Sports. "He's a good player, as well. I'm not dumb about that. But I'm definitely going to put my foot forward and try to cement the spot."

Staying put

There had been a suggestion that Verrills could look to secure a move to a rival NRL club to bolster his chances but the player has ruled that out.

Verrills is under contract until at least the end of 2024 and says he will see that out at the very least.

"Definitely not," Verrills replied when asked if he will be looking to leave. "I only see it as a challenge.”
