NFL: Seattle Seahawks vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers preview

The NFL's first regular season game on German soil will be a huge event for one of the sports growth markets and it could mark a significant change in fortunes for the two teams involved.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were supposed to be Super Bowl contenders this year after Tom Brady reversed his retirement decision in the spring, but they sit uncomfortably at the top of the NFC South with a spotty 4-5 record through nine weeks.

Brady and the Bucs were meant to be the star attraction in Munich this week, but it is the 6-3 Seattle Seahawks who appear to be the more popular team after undergoing a renaissance under Pete Carroll this season.

Quarterback Geno Smith has played lights-out football as the 'Hawks have soared to the top of the NFC West and a win in front of a sell-out crowd on Sunday would put them at the forefront of the playoff picture and cast further doubts on the Buccaneers' credentials.

Both sides beset by injury

Neither team has arrived in Munich in particularly good physical shape with injuries taking their toll over the course of the season.

Seattle listed 14 players on their midweek injury report, which included some big names such as wide receiver DK Metcalf and tight end Noah Fant, but both had come off the list by the end of the week.

Tampa Bay wide receiver Russell Gage Jr. (hamstring), guard Luke Goedeke (foot) and linebacker J.J. Russell (hamstring) did not practice on Thursday and will miss the trip.

But wideouts Julio Jones (knee) and Mike Evans (ribs/ankle) were on the plane with Jones upgraded to a full participant on Thursday after not practicing on Wednesday.

Guard Shaq Mason also looks set to overcome an ankle injury to start the game.

Reports in Germany have suggested the Seahawks are coping well with the transatlantic jet-lag as they came the other way around the planet - their flight to Munich taking only 30 minutes longer than the Buccaneers' nine-hour journey from Tampa.

Smith holds edge over Brady

The number of banged-up receivers on both planes could lead to an interesting afternoon for the two quarterbacks with Smith having outshone Brady so far this season.

The former New York Jets man has a superior completion percentage and vastly greater yards-per-attempt at this point after throwing 15 TD passes to Brady's ten.

He can also make more plays with his legs when he needs to and battled back from an early pick-six against Arizona last week by engineering three straight touchdown drives to seal Seattle's 31-21 win.

Defense key for Bucs

But the Bucs' four wins this season have owed more to their stifling defense than the Brady-led offense.

Tampa Bay has the fifth-best scoring defense and has allowed the fifth-fewest passing yards.

The unit scores highly on some other analytical metric which suggests this will be a much sterner test for Seattle's offense.

The Seahawks' recent schedule has seen them pitted against some teams that are not playoff contenders - much like they were meant to be after trading Russ Wilson earlier this year - but you can only beat who you face.

Brady should have more time to throw than he did in their 16-13 win over the Los Angeles Rams last week as Seattle's pass rush is among the league's six or seven worst in terms of win rate.

But they could become a bit too one-dimensional if the struggles of Leonard Fournette, which encapsulate Tampa Bay's tortuous ground game, continue.

Seattle, who are -105 to cover a +2.5 point Spread, are a capable underdog in this spot and the likelihood that they will have the majority of the support in Munich, despite this being nominally a Tampa Bay home game, is another factor that could tip the balance in a tight contest their way.
