Horse Racing - Racing: Skelton confident ahead of Perth trip

Trainer Dan Skelton says Alnadam is in "good form" heading into the Phil Nelson River Tay Handicap Chase (15:15) at Perth on Thursday.

Alnadam, topweight for the race, is bidding to register a belated first win of the season in the eight-runner event and can be backed at 1/1 to triumph.

Shorter trip to help

The nine-year-old has been set some stiff tasks this season, including when competing in the Grade 2 Peter Marsh Chase at Haydock, but has been freshened up after a break by Skelton and is fitted with first time cheekpieces in the 2m4f contest.

A two-time winner at the trip over fences last season, Alnadam was last seen chasing home the useful Espoir De Guye in a three-runner contest at Warwick in February.

Alnadam has now fallen back to the same mark of 137 that he previously won off at Sandown a year ago, and Skelton is happy with how his charge is looking.

The trainer said: "Alnadam is in good form and we have been dying for it to rain and this is the softest ground we will get.

"The trip is no issue and neither is the track and the slower the better will be best for him, but good to soft is not an inconvenience."

Ellison optimistic of success

Of one of the opposing trainers, Brian Ellison has a fantastic record at Perth and his entry, The King Of May, is just 1lb higher than when successful at Newcastle last time.

Ellison said: "The horse is in great form and I am very hopeful. He probably would have won last time anyway, even if Buster Valentine did not fall. Since he has stepped up to two-and-a-half miles he has proven himself."
