Socceroos coach Graham Arnold admits there is a lot of work to do ahead of the World Cup play-offs after they edged past Jordan 2-1 in Wednesday night’s warm-up clash.
Australia are targeting the 2022 World Cup but will have to get past both the UAE and Peru to make it to the finals in Qatar.
Before they play the UAE in the first play-off, the Socceroos took on Jordan and were made to work hard as they came from behind to win.
Bailey Wright and Awar Mabil got the goals and Arnold says it was just the kind of test they needed to sharpen them up ahead of the UAE clash.
“Probably couldn’t have had a better game to play to be honest,” Arnold told Network 10. “Jordan, good side, they’ve changed enormously since the new coach. They put us under pressure and that’s the perfect game that you want.
“We’ll go back and review the game and obviously there’s a lot to work on still. The good thing is this is the longest I’ve ever been able to coach them for. Seven or eight days. We’ve got another six days now before the UAE game and no days off. It’s all work and we’ll get things right.”
Meanwhile Arnold was delighted to see his players respond well to going a goal behind. Something they were not doing in the group stage.
“It was really interesting and good to see the reaction when we went down one-nil because in the past few games when we’ve gone down one-nil or something’s happened, we’ve fallen apart,” he added. “Tonight that wasn’t the case.”
