Football Australia have thrown their support behind coach Graham Arnold and have backed him to guide the Socceroos to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Australia are fighting to make the World Cup but they first of all have to make their way through a daunting play-off system.
The Socceroos looked bang on course to qualify automatically for the World Cup before they hit a poor run of form at the wrong time.
They have picked up just one win out of their last seven qualifiers and have suffered defeats against Japan and Saudi Arabia in their last two games.
Arnold defiant as Socceroos crash
Australia now face United Arab Emirates in a do-or-die game in Qatar, with the winners then set to face Peru for a place at the World Cup.
It was thought that the FA could make a change and axe Arnold for the play-offs but they will give him the opportunity to see the job out and finish what he started.
“By confirming that Graham will remain head coach of the Socceroos until the completion of our FIFA World Cup campaign, it enables Graham, his support staff and playing group to move forward with certainty, and without delay, to ensure the best possible preparation for the next phase of qualification,” FA chair Chris Nikou said in a statement.
Chief executive James Johnson also believes Arnold should get the chance to finish the job that started back in 2018.
“We will work closely with Graham to ensure the team has the necessary resources, support and approach required to achieve the best possible outcome and ultimately qualification to our fifth consecutive FIFA World Cup,” Johnson said.
