Harness Racing: Stevens undecided on next move

Trainer Heather Stevens has yet to decide whether or not her Strathalbyn Pacing Cup winner Maharajah will take to the track when the country cup circuit moves to Gawler.

Maharajah pulled off an upset when taking out the Strathalbyn Pacing Cup ahead of stablemate Bettorhavtime last Sunday, with Im Full Of Excuses in third.

Gawler next up

Stevens was delighted with the win but has reservations about heading to Gawler as the standing start may not suit her charge.

There is a bit to consider and Stevens will do just that before making the final call.

"Gawler is a standing start so I don’t know if Maharajah will go in that at this stage," Stevens told reporters. "He had a standing start in New Zealand a couple of years ago, but hasn’t had one since being here.

"Bettorhavtime will go in it, but I will have to think about Maharajah. I may even give him a trial to see how he goes away from the strands."

Jimmy Mack defeated

Jimmy Mack was the hot fancy heading into last week's race after winning nine on the spin. He had a tough barrier draw but was expected to overcome it and pick up win number 10.

But Stevens knew her charge could come out on top and with reinsman Wayne Hill in the sulky they did just that with an all-the-way win.

"At Strathalbyn, it’s a hard track to come wide around them, so I was very confident we could beat Jimmy Mack with the way the draws unfolded," Stevens added.

"When they are out wide for that last lap it’s really hard to make ground and Wayne drove the track and conditions perfectly.

"Wayne going through the third quarter in 27.5 set up the win by making sure nothing was going to come from back and wide."
