Champion trainer Emma Stewart set a new record in Australian harness racing when winning nine of the 10 races on the Group 1 Easter Cup card at Launceston on Sunday night.
Stewart combined with driver Mark Pitt to win the nine races. They were not eligible to contest the other race on the card so were denied the chance to go for the clean sweep.
The pair took out the Group 1 Easter Cup with Longfellow and also took out second place with Like A Wildfire.
Stewart and training partner Clayton Tonkin had 10 runners on the night, picking up nine wins and a second in the best possible return. Even Stewart and Tonkin were surprised it went so well.

“We picked out the right horses and really thought we could win them, but it never turns out that way,” Stewart told reporters after the mammoth haul was complete.
“We were definitely anxious the day before. It was good Friday and we’re not religious, but Clayton said we’re not eating meat because we need everything to go right here.”
Go Dancing, Rock Artist, Runaway Celebrity, Soho Historia, Firerockfireroll, Von Art, Beach Life and Captain Rival were the other winners for the stable.
“The one we thought was most vulnerable was Von Art. We haven’t had her long and she can do things wrong, but when she won race eight we thought we’d get the clean sweep then,” Stewart added.
“Captain Rival is a really nice horse. He was a good horse to come home with. I thought ‘Pitty’ (Mark Pitt) might have put him into the race earlier, but he knew what he was doing. To think we planned it and it all came together for a perfect result is amazing.”
