NBA - US Sports: Summer League all you need to know

The NBA Summer League takes place in July as fans get their first glimpses of how every team in the league may line-up in the new season.

The offseason competition allows teams to experiment with their rookie players for the first time in game situations, and there will be a few new coaches overseeing their respective new players in action as well this year.

Three Events Make Up NBA Summer League Schedule

The main Summer League event takes place in Nevada but there are two smaller tournaments beforehand that are considered part of the schedule.

Running for three days from 2nd July, the fourth edition of the California Classic will be held at the Golden State Warriors' Chase Center home in San Francisco.

The Dubs will be involved as they return to the court for the first time since winning a fourth championship in eight years, alongside Miami Heat, Los Angeles Lakers and Sacramento Kings.

The Utah Jazz host the seventh edition of the Salt Lake City Summer League from 5th to 7th July as the Jazz take on Oklahoma City Thunder, Memphis Grizzlies and Philadelphia 76ers in a round-robin event.

The main Summer League, or the Las Vegas Summer League, then runs from 7th to 17th July and all 30 NBA teams will compete.

This year's competition will be held across two venues - the Thomas and Mack Center and Cox Pavilion - which are both located in Paradise near Las Vegas, Nevada.

New coaches involved

This year, fans will get the chance to see how new Los Angeles Lakers coach Darvin Ham may set up his team for the first time at the California Classic, while Mike Brown is also back in the hotseat as a head coach at Sacramento after a six-year stint as an assistant at Golden State.

In Salt Lake City, the post-Quin Snyder era begins for Utah Jazz as first-year coach Will Hardy will oversee the team for the first time before heading off to Las Vegas for the big event.

Charlotte Hornets also have a new coach in place as Steve Clifford has returned for a second stint in charge of the team. Clifford was Charlotte Bobcats/Hornets coach from 2013 to 2018, before a three-year spell as Orlando Magic coach that ended in 2021, so fans should have an idea of what to expect.

The Hornets aren't involved in either of the two earlier events and Charlotte's first Summer League game is on 8th July against Indiana Pacers.

What to look out for in the 2022 NBA Summer League

Of course, there will be some big names on display in the Summer League but the huge stars will see their minutes limited and the real interest is in the rookies.

All eyes will be on Houston Rockets as they experiment with their three first-round draft picks - with forwards Jabari Smith Jr., Tari Eason and guard TyTy Washington all likely to be heavily involved in their rotation in the season ahead.

Orlando Magic's number one pick Paolo Banchero, Chet Holmgren at Oklahoma City Thunder, Detroit Piston's Jaden Ivey and forward Keegan Murray of Sacramento Kings will also attract plenty of interest.

Smith Jr is +400 to win the Rookie of the Year award, Banchero is +350 and Washington is +6000.

Undrafted players to watch in the 2022 NBA Summer League

The top picks will attract most of the attention but there are plenty of undrafted players who will also be looking to impress over the next few weeks.

Scottie Pippen Jr and Shareef O'Neal have been included in Los Angeles Lakers' Summer League roster and the duo's displays will be heavily scrutinized.

Pippen Jr's namesake father was a member of Chicago Bulls' all-conquering team of the 1990s, while O'Neale is the son of Lakers legend Shaquille O'Neal.

Elsewhere, Justin Lewis will be hoping he can show Chicago Bulls he can fit into their set-up after going undrafted from Marquette, and Kofi Cockburn could be one to watch at Utah Jazz.
