Australian Football: Sydney facing fixture pile-up

Sydney FC boss Steve Corica believes his side will be playing three games a week between now and the end of the season if they qualify for the AFC Champions League group stage.

The Sky Blues are priced at 5/2 to finish in the top six of the A-League but their chances of doing so could be hampered by such a tough schedule.

Hectic shedule

Sydney currently occupy sixth spot on the A-League ladder but they have played more games than the teams around them and could slip down if results elsewhere go against them.

Now they have to deal with a Champions League play-off clash against Kaya FC on Tuesday night when a victory will take them through to the group stage.

Best team lost says Corica

That would mean games against South Korean outfit Jeonbuk, Vietnamese champions Hoang Anh Gia Lai and the Kevin Muscat-coached Yokohama F Marinos.

"It's going to be extremely difficult," Corica told reporters. "It's difficult enough as it is with everything going on around us with the pandemic, injuries, players away with the national team.

"Then if we get through to the group stage we're going to be away for three weeks so a lot of (ALM) games will have to be brought forward for us.

"If we do (qualify) we will be playing every three days from here until the end of the season."

Going out to win

Despite possibility of all the extra games Corica says it is important they go through and they will be going all out for the win.

"We're at home and have the opportunity to advance to the group stage which is important to the club," he added. "There's going to be quite a few changes. This will be the case all season and you've got to freshen up the squad."
