Sydney FC bounced back from losing two key players on the morning of the Western United clash to fight out a 1-1 draw against John Aloisi's side.
The Sky Blues are priced at 15/2 to win the 2021/22 A-League minor premiership and picked up what could turn out to be a crucial point at Nestrata Jubilee Stadium on Saturday.
Sydney coach Steve Corica only found out on Saturday morning that star midfielder Anthony Caceres and defender Harry Van der Saag had picked up gastro and would be unable to play a part.
Thankfully for Corica, Max Burgess was able to slot into the midfield and played a key role when scoring the equaliser as Sydney picked up a big point against the ladder leaders.
Keeper saves the day for Sydney
Corica hopes to have Kosta Barbarouses and fringe Socceroo Mustafa Amini back from injury for the next game but says they can now cope without key players.
"We're getting used to the conditions whether it's gastro or whatever these days so we've just got to go with the flow and they will be back next week," Corica told reporters after the game.
"I'm sure Kosta will be back next week as well for his first game of the season and we're hoping Musti will be back as well."
Steven Lustica had given Western the lead but Burgess bagged his second goal of the season to rescue a point and Corica praised him for his star performance in an unfamiliar role.
"I thought he played really well as a number six. He got on the ball, did all the right things, kept it for us," Corica added. "Defensively, he was good as well, and I'm pleased for him as well to get the goal.
"I thought he took it really well. Finished it off. I'm sure he's really happy."
