Australian Racing: Talk It Up targets upset

We’ve a busy Sunday in store with a metro meeting at Devonport Synthetic, provincial fixtures at Sunshine Coast and Kalgoorlie plus seven country meetings to get involved in.

Watson to continue good form

Shake Baby Shake is expected to jump at short odds ahead of the fourth raced on the Kalgoorlie card, a 1200m Class 2 handicap set to take place on a soft 5 track.

Adam Durrant’s charge showed good form when keeping on well to claim second having raced from the front in an 1100m Class 1 contest at this venue at the end of last month. Well drawn to employ similar tactics here however it’s not all good news for Luke Campbell’s mount given that she proved a disappointment when last of eight over this trip at Belmont Park when racing first up prior.

That Belmont Park effort marked the daughter of Foxwedge’s first outing on a wet track and it may pay to oppose the four-year-old with in form hoop Holly Watson looking to hold strong claims of causing an upset with her mount Talk It Up.

Watson heads into this contest with a 25% strike-rate (7/25) in the last two weeks and her mount has delivered some solid efforts in similar race to this this spell including when three-and-a-half-lengths second in a Class 2 over 1100m here on his penultimate start.

Versatile tactically Talk It Up has placed over this track and trip on a soft 5 track in the past and is taken to slot in behind the early pace prior to providing trainer Peter Fernie with a victory.

Epauvescent to score at Sunshine Coast

Top weight Chosen Distance has four places from ten starts to his name and he is expected to have his supporters ahead of the fifth race on the Sunshine Coast card, a 1600m maiden race.

Trained by Matt Kropp the son of Dissident followed up a solid third over 1300m with a fourth in a 1625m maiden at the end of last month. Both of those efforts came at Toowoomba and while the four-year-old has the ability to take this out he hasn’t been done any favours with the barrier draw and he may struggle to get the lead from barrier 16.

With the above in mind Epauvescent is taken to break his maiden at the 14th time of asking having finished in the first three in each of his last three starts.

The five-year-old has taken his form to a new level in recent times and tried to make all the running when finishing a length second in a 1600m maiden at Gatton on his penultimate start.

Dropped to 1350m when filling the same position having been ridden from mid-division in a 1350m contest at Ipswich subsequently and with a good draw four off the rail here he looks up to providing veteran jockey Larry Cassidy with a winner.

Berry to double up

Obvious Step looks likely to jump as favourite ahead of the fifth race on the Devenport Synthetic card, an 1880m Benchmark 68 event.

Glen Stevenson’s mare showed a liking for this venue when third over 1650m here in May while she followed that up with a length fourth over the same track and trip the following month.

Both of those efforts came in Benchmark 62 contests and the daughter of Sidestep again performed well at that level when runner-up over 1420m under today’s jockey Daniel Ganderton last time out.

Brings solid form into the race but course regular Port Berry is preferred having demonstrated good form at this circuit in recent times.

The six-year-old had Obvious Step behind her when finishing runner-up in a Benchmark 62 contest over 1650m here on her penultimate start and having finished strongly from off the pace she delivered a third career win when upped to this distance for the first time to score in the same grade here last month.

Jockey Sigrid Carr knows the daughter of Jakkalberry well and the pair are taken to register a third victory from nine starts together in what looks a competitive Benchmark 68 event.
