NBA - US Sports: Thompson stars as Dubs secure Finals return

Klay Thompson hit eight three-pointers and scored a game-high 32 points as Golden State Warriors overcame Dallas Mavericks 120-110 to book a place in the NBA Finals.

Golden State can be backed at 4/6 to win the NBA Championship outright, while Thompson is 10/1 to be named the Finals MVP.

The Dubs won the first three games of the Western Conference Finals, but were denied a sweep as Dallas hit back in Game 4.

Warriors always in charge

Golden State responded with a convincing win in the fifth and final game and were never behind at the Chase Center, leading by as much as 25 points in the third quarter before seeing out the game.

Thompson led the game in scoring as all five of the Warriors' starters managed double digits, while Kevon Looney and Andrew Wiggins impressed with 18 and 10 rebounds respectively.

Thompson won three championships with Golden State between 2015 and 2018 and was a member of the team that reached five straight Finals series.

The 32-year-old sustained an ACL injury in the Finals defeat to Toronto Raptors in 2019 and was only able to return in January of this year after a number of setbacks.

Golden State missed out on the play-offs altogether in each of the last two seasons in Thompson's absence, and the guard is delighted to have helped the team secure another shot at the Larry O'Brien trophy.

Thompson answers the critics

"I am on cloud nine, just incredible," Thompson told NBC after the game. "Everybody in this organization knows what we're been through the last few years and I was thinking about the days I was in Santa Cruz or I was on the rehab table. I dreamt of this moment.

"And we were written off by a lot of experts, quote unquote, but I knew we had it in us. We're going to celebrate this, but we still want the whole thing."

Golden State will face either Boston or Miami Heat in the Finals - the Celtics hold a 3-2 lead in the Eastern Conference Finals ahead of Game 6 on Friday.
