Australian Football: Victory fired up for Sydney clash

Melbourne Victory are itching to get back out on the pitch against Sydney FC on Tuesday night after going over two weeks without kicking a ball in anger.

Victory have set their sights on winning the A-League grand final and currently sit top of the ladder after winning four of their opening seven games of the season.

Enforced rest

Victory have been forced to take a rest with a number of A-League games being postponed and they last played on 8th January when they fought out a 1-1 draw with Adelaide United.

The break, while not ideal, has given the Victory players a chance to rest up and clear up one or two niggles and they are now raring to go ahead of the Sydney clash.

Victory go top after Western win

Victory boss Tony Popovic is happy with the state of his players and says they are ready to go out and get a result.

"We've got to now regroup after a bit of a break, 17 days without a game," Popovic told reporters. "When you've got a game against Sydney FC it should be easy motivation for the players.

"They look happy and ready to play. We want to put on a good performance."

Poor recent history

Victory's recent results against Sydney have not been great and they have lost the last eight meetings between the two sides.

But Popovic believes they are primed to break that run and pick up their first win in three years against the Sky Blues.

"Statistics are always important, I didn't know that stat," Popovic added. "History can always be created and it can be broken. I feel we have a very good opportunity in front of our home fans and members who haven't had a chance to watch us for a few weeks.

"I believe in the team, I believe in the players, and I believe we can get the points."
